Jeff Awards

The Joseph Jefferson awards for Chicago theater are one of my favorites. Or actually two of my favorites, because there is a gala awards event for non-equity, as well as equity performers. But this is about the Jeff Equity awards.  Sponsors pay the cost of the events, and the admission cost for attendees (which is very reasonable) goes to support people who work in the theater. They generally also take up a collection at the event itself, and the event is fabulous. It includes live performances of scenes from nominated plays and musicals. The atmosphere is electric. There is an after-party at each event, featuring excellent food and drink. The equity awards are generally held at the Drury Lane theater in Oakbrook, which is a great venue with its own restaurants, so it’s easy for them to provide a buffet after the show. There is a red carpet backdrop, but it’s not restricted to nominees; you can stand in front of it yourself and ask someone to take your picture in your awesome gown. I find Chicago theater people to be very hard-working and down to earth, so it’s fun to hang out with them and get to know them a little. Some fantastic plays and musicals that make their way to Broadway started in Chicago, and Broadway has returned the favor with a program called “Broadway in Chicago" which brings excellent touring companies to the Windy City. This is a black tie event, and one that I anticipate every year, or twice every year.

What I really like about this event:  Chicago theater stars are friendly and engaging and the Jeff Awards give me an opportunity to meet them and thank them for what they do, whether acting in a David Mamet play or singing in "Wicked" or "Mary Poppins" so I love the informality of the after-party.  And the food is great, both the pre-show Hors d'ouevres and the post-show buffet.
