Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards
One of the major fundraising events for the Desert Aids Project in Palm Springs is the Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards, held annually at the Palm Springs Convention Center. It’s generally a mid-winter event, although Palm Springs is warm and inviting that time of year. With great headliners (Kristin Chenoweth, Chaka Khan, Melissa Etheridge, Barry Manilow) and a fast-moving program, the gala itself is outstanding, and it’s followed by after-party events with more food, drink and dancing.
The Desert Aids Project supports those living with or at risk of HIV in the Coachella Valley. It began in 1984 as a volunteer organization, and now has a budget of over $40 million annually, a substantial portion of which is raised through the gala, which has been an annual event for 25 years.
The 2021 event is scheduled for March 21, so it’s likely to be virtual, but I’m awaiting confirmation.
What I like about this event: As a Chicago resident, just wearing a sleeveless gown in February is a treat! But I love the care that is taken each year to put on a stellar event, with honorees from all over (in 2020, Dr. Deborah Birx), and celebrities who walk a red carpet just outside the convention center. For higher levels of sponsorship, VIP treatment is available, but simply buying a ticket is worth it with this event.
